Summary Reader Response Draft 3
The
Kawasaki H2R produced in Tokyo, Japan was first released in 2015 with a limited
amount in the world. Based on the website (Kawasaki Ninja H2®R |
Closed-Course Hypersport Motorcycle, n.d.), the motorcycle has a 998cc
inline-four-cylinder liquid cooling engine which has a staggering 310
horsepower. This unprecedented power output can only be made possible through a
system of finely-tuned and carefully crafted high-quality components. It has a
supercharger which is specifically chosen for its high-rpm performance, as it
is incredibly efficient at compressing air while minimizing heat. This
supercharger was designed to match the engine, allowing high-efficiency
operation over a wider range of conditions that could not be provided by a
regular supercharger. Also, according to this website (Ninja H2R | 2023 |
Kawasaki, n.d.), it says that it has a unique set of transmissions called
the Dog-ring Transmission which cannot usually be found in other motorcycles on
the roads. This was developed with feedback from the Kawasaki Racing Team, to
facilitate smooth, quick shifting and therefore this dog-ring type transmission
was selected. Hence, these features make the bike have high horsepower which can
do at high speeds. The Kawasaki H2R is a powerful motorcycle with high-end
parts such as a supercharged engine and a dog-ring transmission. These features
will give the rider a competitive edge over their opponents to dominate on the
track when racing despite it being not street legal.
One of the
main features is the supercharged engine. According to the HowStuffWorks
webpage (Harris & Hall, 2021), the supercharged engine increases the intake
by compressing air above atmospheric pressure without creating a vacuum. To
pressurize the air, the supercharger must spin faster than the engine itself
and the supercharger can go as high as 50,000 to 65,000 RPM. This will force 50
percent more air into the engine, which then more fuel can be added to the
charge, this will provide a boost which results in the increase of power of the
engine. Getting more fuel into the charge would make a more powerful explosion
which then increases its horsepower by 46 percent and torque by 31 percent
allowing the rider to go at high speeds to overtake other riders quickly.
Another
main feature is the dog-ring transmission. According to the CarThrottle webpage
(Wheels Nuts, 2016), unlike other motorcycles that use a synchromesh gearbox,
the H2R uses a Dog-ring transmission which can normally be found in F1/MotoGP.
This unique transmission has small dog teeth that are engaged to lock the two
gears together. The gears have fewer, much larger dog teeth which results in
the gears being fully engaged or fully disengaged. The advantages of this
transmission allow gear change to be completed quickly by briefly blipping the
throttle with minimum use of the clutch, which benefits the racer as the engine
will be able to power the wheels for a longer time.
One of the
disadvantages is that the dog ring transmission is targeted at riders with
specialized knowledge. According to the CarThrottle webpage (Wheels Nuts,
2016), the dog ring gearbox is difficult to use in urban traffic or driving in
the city as the user must manually match the speed of the gears quickly to
prevent the dog teeth from clashing with each other else it will damage the
teeth causing it to wear faster. Also, changing gears will produce loud and
distinct gear engagement noises, which can be annoying for some users.
Therefore, the synchromesh transmission would be ideal for the road in traffic
as it offers simpler operation and more leeway when it comes to shifting gears
and it tends to last longer.
Another
problem about the motorcycle is the noise and the safety issue. According to
Ridehow (Smith, 2021), its gearing, suspension setup, and chassis are optimized
for high-speed track performance and provide exceptional handling and
stability. The bike can reach high speed which exceeds the speed limit on most
of the streets as well as it does not have headlights, taillights, side mirrors
which will impose a risk on the rider and the rider’s surroundings on the road.
Smith also said that the bike exceeds the permissible noise level for road
vehicles which is disruptive in residential and public areas. Therefore, it was
decided that this bike would not be made street legal.
In
conclusion, This H2R bike is a very powerful and unique bike that is built
mainly for racing. The parts that are found in the bike are all
high-end/technology parts that can give the riders an edge over their opponent.
Sadly, this bike is not made street legal as it doesn't pass the safety
requirements for being on the streets.
